Identity: An Indigenous Perspective

Identity is a subject often explored by artists.  This includes personal and social identity, both as individuals, and as a part of a group.  This exploration often questions stereotypes while looking at gender, sexuality, race and heritage.

Our July call for entry Identity: An Indigenous Perspective is a tribute to Great Lakes area Indigenous artists.  We invite all indigenous artists from The Great Lakes States (MI, WI, IN, OH, IL, MN, PA, NY) who are members of a Federally Recognized Tribe to apply for the exhibition.

We are interested in what identity means to you as a Native Artist in 2024.  What does it look like and feel like. This is an opportunity for your voice to be heard through the first ever art exhibition featuring Native Artists of the Great Lakes States.

This show is an artist’s choice of medium in 3-D or 2-D.  The art does not have to be “Indigenous Art”, but rather art made by an indigenous artist.

We are in Chippewa County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. SAAC has a history of providing exhibition opportunities for all. Our county's population is 17% Native American and is the home of two federally recognized tribes: The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and Bay Mills Indian Community. SAAC has collaborated with both tribes on projects and has tribal members as past and current board members.
